In our Edinburgh Carers Survey 2023, we heard from carers about the barriers they face in taking a break: 41% find it difficult to relax; 55% find it stressful or worrying; 39% said that no one else is available to provide alternative care.

We have a service called Wee Breaks which enables unpaid carers to take some time away from their caring role. Taking time off can improve your own physical and mental wellbeing and allow you to continue supporting the person you care for. We provide funding, access to local activities or events, and support to plan your break.

To find out more about our Wee Breaks service, visit the website or contact us on or 0131 622 6666.

Carer’s break

“I care for my daughter with mental health challenges, balancing my caring role for her with working full-time which I find difficult and a challenge as I don’t often want to leave her alone for long or be too far away in case she needs me.

When the opportunity for a meal and passes to Gala Bingo came up I jumped at the chance, it was something local and not too far away from home. My friend and I had a lovely meal and game of bingo. We didn’t win, although I shouted by mistake, but it was a great night – I haven’t laughed like that for a long time!”
