Amy cares for her 14-year-old son Leon, who has complex needs. Described by Amy as an ‘absolute joy’, Leon cannot manage much on his own and requires round-the-clock care.
One of Amy’s passions is gardening. Her goal was to transform their overgrown front garden into a welcoming, wheelchair-friendly space that Leon could enjoy. With a rented house and no option for permanent changes, Amy was determined to find a solution that would help not only Leon enjoy the garden, but to create a space where she could continue her hobby and relax.
Amy’s vision was a garden that would be both functional and enjoyable. Knowing this project would be expensive, Amy reached out to us for support. VOCAL’s Wee Breaks service provides funding for carers to help carers take a break from caring.
“I was thrilled to find out that VOCAL could help,” Amy says. “Their support made a world of difference.”
Amy’s application to our Wee Breaks Fund was successful and she was able to purchase large rubber mats to create a smooth, level pathway, making the garden wheelchair accessible. Additionally, she bought a picnic table designed to fit Leon’s wheelchair, ensuring he could comfortably join family meals and enjoy the outdoors.
Amy’s hard work didn’t stop there. She cleared the overgrown hedges and shrubs, making way for new, sensory-friendly additions. The garden now features highly scented plants like lavender and jasmine, which Leon and Amy both love. The transformation has brought immense joy to Amy and Leon. Their garden is no longer just a space but a vibrant, sensory-rich environment that the whole family can enjoy.
Amy adds: “Without VOCAL’s help, this project would have taken much longer and been far more challenging. It was so easy, and for me, no effort at all!”
Balancing caring responsibilities can be challenging, but Amy’s story highlights the positive impact of getting a break from caring and how thinking creatively can improve your wellbeing.
