This week is #ChallengePovertyWeek. A key theme of the 2023 Edinburgh Carers Survey, from VOCAL and our partners, is the impact of caring on money and work. We found that 72% disagreed with the statement ‘being a carer has improved my finances.’
There is a range of information, advice and support available:
- We offer surgeries and one-to-one appointments, giving you access to expert advice on: relevant benefits and statutory rights; savings on home energy costs; and ways to reduce the expense of caring
- Last year, the Scottish government launched a website which provides information on the range of advice and financial support available in Scotland. This is a one-stop-shop to help anyone struggling with the cost-of-living crisis. It includes details on help for households to meet rising energy, housing and other costs.
- Edinburgh Community Food work in partnership with the The Big House Project in Fife to provide local organisations, community cafes, charities, schools and health & social work teams with essential items for children and families. They offer a pathway to preventative support, distributing household items to several thousand families over the winter and beyond. Our Carer Support Team can help refer you. - Food Facts Friends are holding a cost-of-living event in Penicuik Town Hall on Friday 11 October, 12pm to 4pm. It will include arts and crafts for kids, and there will be a wide range of agencies in attendance. For more info, email or call 07507697109.
- Changeworks are hosting a drop-in event, offering free and impartial advice on energy saving and efficiency. Pop along to Newbattle Library on Friday 11 October, between 11am and 3pm. Rima, an energy advice expert from Changeworks, will be there to help you.
